Review: The Dirty Picture

Film: The Dirty Picture
Director: Milan Luthria
Cast: Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar
Rating: ****
It’s the mid-80s. An ageing, vain superstar is surrounded by his cronies as a script writer narrates a story about an orphan to him.”This orphan hero angle is so '60s,” cuts in the star. “Let’s give the hero a family for a change. Let’s give him a sister too. Then let’s get her raped.” Everyone around can’t stop marveling at the idea. The writer is impressed too. “Let’s make this movie,” he says.
The ’80s was probably the lowest point in our cinema. Doodh ka karz, behen ka badla and maa kasam ruled, as plot lines of each film resembled that of the other. The story almost always revolved around the film’s lead star, a comedy track was a must, there had to be a punch line in every scene, and crassness was a necessary ingredient. There was also a vamp prancing in skimpily clad outfits around the good-hearted hero, before he spurned her advances for the pristine heroine. But even as we may squirm at some of these films today, many of them continue to entertain us on lazy Sunday afternoons. Even camp, after all, must be celebrated.
And that is what The Dirty Picture does. Meant to be a biopic of south siren Silk Smitha, the film really is a recreation of an era when hyperbole in cinema was cool. It also pays tribute to all things inane about our films. Even as it depicts an era when the formula ruled, The Dirty Picture lives the formula itself.
Director Milan Luthria and writer Rajat Arora give us a dialoguebaazi-filled potboiler that plays to the gallery, and is a vehicle for its lead actor Vidya Balan to display histrionics. Entertainment is the sole purpose. It has its shares of inanities, especially in the latter half (another trait typical to our films – the post-interval mishmash), but has enough masala and good performances to ride us through to the end. If I may use the oft-repeated trade jargon, The Dirty Picture is complete paisa vasool.
The tempo is racy. The Tamil song, ‘Nakka Mukka’ (from the 2008 film,Kadhalil Vizhunthen), blares as the opening credits roll. The song then appears at strategic points in the narrative, one where Vidya gyrates suggestively, licking her lips as she thrusts her hips hard. It’s a masterstroke, buying the rights to the song, and it continues to ring in your ears much after you’ve walked out of theatre. The Bappi Lahiri ditty ‘Ooh la la’ is, then, second best.
Vidya plays junior artist Reshma (Hindi for silk, also probably a reference to one of Silk Smitha’s popular films, Reshma Ki Jawani), before film producer Silva Ganesh christens her Silk. She goofs up her first big break – an item song with superstar Suryakant. Naseeruddin Shah gives a pitch-perfect performance as matinee idol Suryakant, each body movement laudable; every expression priceless. Shah makes the role his own, making it impossible to envision any other actor in his place. “What makes you special?” he asks Silk. “I have had 500 women before you.” She looks at him, eyes sparking, and says, “But have you had the same woman 500 times?” He’s visibly surprised; even pleased. So are you.
To have a Hindi film heroine who is unapologetic about using her sexuality to achieve means is always welcome. To have a Hindi film heroine who does it with such relish is a real victory. And Vidya Balan pulls off Silk in a manner no current female actor can. Heck, no actor in recent times has shown – if I may say so – the balls to give himself/herself to a role as wholeheartedly as Vidya has (barring, probably, Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar). She is fearless, giving an uninhibited portrayal of someone who enjoys adulation, but dies a lonely death. She is the fantasy of millions, but craves love. She doesn’t get it. And Vidya brings all that – the flamboyance, the sensuality, the heartbreak – to her role (and without coming across even a tad vulgar).
And she is aided by some fiery dialogue by Arora. The one-liners come thick and fast (so many, you lose track after a point), some meant to amuse, others a tool to shock. Nudity is minimal (although there’s ample cleavage at display); it’s the dialogue that makes The Dirty Picture sassy.
But post-interval, the writing lags. The track involving Silk and Suryakant’s brother, played by Tusshar, slows down proceedings mainly because Tusshar fails to rise to the challenge of performing with far more able actors. He sticks out like a sore thumb.
Emraan Hashmi, on the other hand, is good. The chemistry between him and Vidya is sizzling (the two dislike each other, making their camaraderie interesting). But the need to pander to Emraan’s ‘hero’ image jars. Why else would a filmmaker (played by Hashmi) turn hero suddenly, especially when there was a clear alternative Arora/Luthria could have opted for? He’s given a song too, one that is lilting but slows down the tempo. It’s kinda funny – the film speaks of the misogynistic nature of the film industry but can’t entirely escape it.
Luthria seems to have been stuck between making a wholly commercial product and staying true to the story. While he does balance it well for most part, and quite efficiently too, he could have done without resorting to convenient twists in the film towards the end. His isn’t really a biopic, surely not an authentic one, as he picks up threads from different sources (Suryakant seems to be influenced by two-three superstars, for example) and uses it to his advantage (he never claimed to make an authentic telltale, so it’s okay). Sadly, though, he fails to make Silk’s downward spiral as engaging as her rise to fame.
With a highly entertaining first half, and a mediocre second, The Dirty Picture falls short of being truly remarkable. But for that ‘boombaat’ of a performer, Vidya Balan (one star solely for her), and entertaining dialogue, the film is worth the ticket price.
Watch The Dirty Picture for the gutsiest, most versatile actor we have today.

Jaana Pehchana Movie Review

Story:
Arun Prakash Mathur (Sachin) has lost his lady love Lily (Ranjeeta) to a deadly disease like cancer. He remains a bachelor for many years, opens a cancer hospital in her name and then enters Asha (Ranjeeta) who looks exactly like Lily. Asha is a novelist and is writing a story on Arun and predictably enough by the time she finishes her story, the two fall in love.

Analysis:
Sachin is the screenplay, story writer, lead actor and director of the film. He puts up a mediocre storyline of falling in love with the lookalike of your lost love that seemed to be the most obvious for a sequel. First of all coming out with a sequel after 33 years is way too long and that too with a mediocre storyline does not make much sense. While narrating the flashback a lot of scenes and songs from the original are repeated, so for those who haven’t seen the original, the story seems complete.

Performances:
There is no doubt that Sachin is a talented actor but comparing it with the prequel makes him a little week. Obviously age has taken a toll on both Sachin and Ranjeeta and their chemistry doesn’t seems as interesting as it was in the original film, though both do a decent job to carry the film on their shoulder. The rest of the supporting cast is mediocre too.

Technicalities:
Sachin’s direction is average and all the other technicalities are old and replete. You see the same old Rajshri touch like in other films with no novelty. Though Ravindra Jain’s music is soothing, it cannot hold the film throughout.

Plus Points:
        Sachin
        Ranjeeta
        Music

Minus Points:
        Technicalities
        Boring
        No Novelty

Final Word:
Only watch if you loved the prequel

Rating: 2/5

Rivaaz Movie Review

Story:

The basic plot is a tradition (rivaaz) that forces women in a particular village to fall into prostitution and she is pimped by none other than her own father and brothers. The top guns of the village including the Mukhiya (Alok Nath), the police (Yashpal Sharma); and well the Thakur (Sayaji Shinde) are all involved in this rivaaz. Infact, Thakur is the main buyer of these girls and buys them as soon as they turn 18 and are eligible to lose their virginity.

One such girl is Bela (Ritisha) whose father (Rajendra Gupta) is already under a contract of Rs. 1 lakh with Thakur to be drowned into the tradition. Rahul, who is from a nearby city falls in love with Bela and wants to get her out of this dirty business. What happens next is better left unsaid.

Analysis:

Couple of weeks back, ‘Khap’ released that too was based on age-old Indian traditions. These films have good subjects to play with but totally disappoint with poor scripting, direction and performances.

Performances:

Weak script leaves no scope for the actors to perform and the best would be by Vijay Raaz who plays a local pimp. Senior actors like Alok Nath, Deepti Naval and Reema are totally wasted in the film. The film has an item song by Sambhavna Seth which is just okay. The rest of the supporting cast including Meghna Naidu does not do any good.

Technicalities:

Direction, script, music, everything is poor. There is nothing that can be called as the saving grace of the film. The four songs added cause headache and nothing else.

Plus Points:

- Story
- Good Names

Minus Points:

- Performances
- Direction
- Technicalities

Final Word: Not worth your penny spent.

That Girl in Yellow Boots Movie Review

Story:

The film is about a fair-skinned British girl Ruth (Kalki Koechlin) who comes to Mumbai in quest of her missing father. Her journey has several highs and lows as with each passing day she discovers an ugly truth of the life and her past. She works without permit and gets lost in the selfish ‘City of Dreams’ where every moment she is emotionally and physically exploited.

Analysis:

The film also has an undertone that playfully carries forward the story based in the underbelly of Mumbai. Her journey and her determination to find out about her roots forms the crux of the film and director Anurag Kashyap does a flawless job as a story teller. His tight hand at direction makes it more edgy than what it appears. Both Kalki and Anurag as writers of the film have managed to put a heart-touching story on screen which is perfectly helmed by Mr. Kashyap.

Performances:

Talking about the performances in the film and the actors in it totally take the film on a new high. Kalki Koechlin as the protagonist has totally carried the film on her shoulders and doesn’t disappoint them at all. Prashant Prakash and Gulshan Devaiya are flawless in their parts whereas veteran like Naseeruddin Shah has managed to prove his excellence with panache. Naseer’s short yet stunning cameo is powerful enough to long last in the back of your mind. Shiv Subramaniam and Makrand Deshpande’s cameo too are decent.

Technicalities:

Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography is another aspect that has added depth to this film. The film also has humor streaks that are instilled at right moments to maintain the balance of this emotional draining film.
Though the film isn’t the one that will interest the masala commercial film lovers but any one who sees it once will certainly be smitten by its sheer excellence. Anurag Kashyap as a filmmaker is slowly yet steadily coming up with films that are beyond the limits of commercial and critical aspects of cinema.

Plus Points:

- Performance,
- Direction,
- cinematography,
- Thrilling

Minus Points:

- Not for the masses,
- sad ending

Final Word: Not to be missed

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan Movie Review

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan Movie Review

Story:
As the title clearly suggests and as we can clearly understand from the promos, the film is about (Kush) Imran Khan who initially is looking for a perfect bride for his brother Luv (Ali Zafar), apparently falls in love with the girl he chooses for Ali.  Katina plays a carefree rockstar kind-of-a-girl named Dimple Dixit who also very predictably likes Kush.

Luv stays in London and wants to get married before Christmas. Since their choices have been similar since childhood Luv asks Kush to look for a Dulhan for him.

Analysis:
The film could have been made much better for entertainment value. Yes it does entertain but in parts. Humour added to it is not very novel but manages to get a smile on your faces. But a film with high expectations that it was fails to impress.

Performances:
Talking about the performances, no one really makes an impression. Katrina was way too better in her last release ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ and just when we thought that she is evolving as an actress she gives us this. Imran Khan is pretty mediocre and very monotonous just like his other films. The only saving grace of the film is Ali Zafar’s performance. This talent is one thing to look out for in the future. The rest of the supporting cast is Okay.

Technicalities:
Debutante director Ali Abbas Zafar could not do much to save the film. Though he shows brilliance but in parts. The screenplay is also by him which can be commended but that too in parts. The locations and cinematography can be given a plus 1 as always in Yash Raj Films. Editing could have been sleeker. Sohail Sen’s music is good and soothing to the ears. The background score is good too. But the script is pretty mediocre and required a different angle.

Plus Points:
        Ali Zafar
        Music
        Cinematography

Minus Points:
        Script

Final Word:
        It’s a once watch

Rating: 2/5

Salman Khan Bodyguard Movie Review

Salman Khan Bodyguard Movie Review

Story:

The film revolves around Lovely Singh aka Salman Khan, a dutiful ‘Bodygurad’ whose job is to protect Divya played by Kareena Kapoor who is the daughter of a business tycoon Sartaj Rana played by Raj Babbar.

Divya is annoyed by the fact that ‘Bodyguard’ Lovely’s presence is haunting her freedom and hence to divert his mind else where she decides to throw a trap of a fake love story. She calls Lovely by a fake name and expresses her love for him. At a point she even succeeds in diverting his mind. But on the course of all these confusions she discovers an unusual facet of Lovely’s life that remained unseen forever.

The film just before climax takes unusual turns and twists which makes it an interesting masala film with a relatable plot.

Analysis:

Despite of it being considered as an action film the film is a love story at heart. True to Salman’s words, the film reminds you of his romantic films that ruled the roots in his peak years as chocolate boy. And apart from Salman, Kareena’s claims too have proved fruitful as her character in the film is not just a love interest of the protagonist but it is equally parallel in terms of lead.

Performances:

Both Kareena and Salman prove their mettle as a couple and have successfully delivered one of their best performances of their respective career. Kareena has not only looked gorgeous on screen but her acting in the film is also as flawless as her reminiscing beauty. Salman in fact has delivered powerful as well as content performance in the film. After a long time has he got a film to showcase his acting skills rather than just the chiseled body and the beautiful face.

Raj Babbar and Rajat Rawali are decent in their performances whereas Aditya Pancholi and Katrina Kaif’s short special appearances in the film are as strong as they were expected to be.

Technicalities:

Director Siddique who also wrote the story and the screenplay of the film has done a perfect job in helming the film for the third time as before the Hindi version, one more film has been remade in a South Indian language apart from the original that was also directed by him. He has very cleverly injected Salman Khan’s personality traits in the film to gel with the plot of the romantic-action flick. The necessary amendments made in the film’s screenplay add power to the story as the polishing makes it more edgy and appealing for the Bollywood cinema lover.

From editing to narration the film has winner written all over it. With this one Salman has slammed his critics who criticized him for his no-brainer comedy-masala films. The Music of the film deserves special credit as Himesh Reshammiya has made a full throttle comeback to Bollywood with a powerful album in the name of ‘Bodyguard’. Pritam’s composed ‘I Love You’ too is soft and easy on ears.

Plus Points:

- Performancez
- Technicalties
- Katrina Kaif’s cameo
- Music

Final Word: The film is a perfect family entertainer and an ideal release for a festive occasion. ‘Bodygard’ will successfully enthrall you to the core.

Story:

The film starts with ‘Zainab’ (Humaima) who is slated to be hanged for killing her own father. Her petition to president is shunned as and hence with no option left she decides to reveal her story to the whole world through media as her last wish.

Her story starts with the character sketch of her father Hakeem Sahib based in old Lahore who fathered 14 kids; of them seven daughters and a son Saifi, who is not really a son but a homosexual. He bars his daughters from enjoying any novelties of modern life, even education.

Their neighbor ‘Mustafa’ (Atif Aslam) is in love with Hakim’s one of the daughters Ayesha (Mahira Khan), plays a hero in their life to help Saif get out of the four walls of his home and get a job. He even gets married to Ayesha without her father’s consent.

Saif there gets molested and raped at his workplace, on discovering the father kills him much to his family members shock. In order to escape the father gets involved in an extra martial affair with Meena played by Iman Ali who is a prostitute. Meena delivers Hakeem’s child which is gain a girl against his wish of giving a baby boy. But however he doesn’t wants her daughter to be brought up in a flesh market.

When Meena takes the girl child to Hakeem’s place his secret unfolds. The brothel owner played by Shafqat Cheema follows Meena to Hakeem’s place in order to get the baby girl and in order to save the child from prostitution he tries to kill the baby. And in order to save the baby Zainab kills her father and hence gets arrested to be hanged for her crime. Eventually after her story ends and the intruding media tries to save her life in the name of humanity but gets hanged to death, leaving the world with a thought.

Performances:

Performances by Atif Aslam and Humaima Malick are truly appreciative and so is the performance by Manzar Sehbai. If not for the less publicity and average songs the film could have garnered much needed word of mouth pre-release. But with positive reviews pouring in, the film is sure to catch on the rage.

Technicalities:

Direction, Screenplay and Story by Shoaib Mansoor are edgy and engaging. He has done a commendable job in handling the social-thought provocation film. Music in the film disappoints as having names like Atif Aslam, the songs of the film were expected to be chartbusters however they end on a mediocre note. The film had an engaging story and an equally engaging screenplay that keeps you on the edge of the seat throughout the film.

Plus Points: Atif Aslam, Humaima Malick, story

Minus Points: It’s a little Depressing

Final Word: Watch it for a wonderful message

Chitkabrey - Shades of Grey Movie Review

Story:
The film revolves around the persistent issue of ragging of students in colleges that often leads to fatal consequences.  Director Suneet Arora’s mediocre approach towards the serious issue has added to the further woes for the film. Ravi Kishan plays the man who was assaulted in the name of ragging and comes back with a vengeance to teach his tormentors a lesson.  His tormentors are seven couples who are brought together for a party and are slated to face Ravi’s character who has recovered from the trauma.

Analysis:

The film also was touted to be the boldest film ever but the explicit scenes in the film make it look cheaper than ever. The scenes lack aesthetics and have been absurdly portrayed. Also the teaching and the moral of the issue has been dragged too much which makes its over peachy.

Performances:

The performances by the stars add no fuel to this film. Especially Ravi Kishan who drew praises for his performances in films like ‘Raavan’ and ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’ has delivered a rather pitiful performance in this film.

Technicalities:

Same goes for director Suneet Arora who made huge claims before the film’s release. The film that was supposed to throw some light over the ragging issue turns out be a melodramatic film that has nothing to cheer about. From poor screenplay to the irrelevant story and loose script, the film has more minus points than the positive ones.

Plus Points: none

Minus Points: Performances, Technicalities

Final Word: The film is easily avoidable and is better left rather than wasting your time and money on a pitiable film like this.

Stand By Hindi Movie Review

Story:

Like Yash Raj’s film ‘Chak De India’ in this film too the ambitious coach dreams to come up with a team that’s built on true merit and not politics. The coach urges the football federation to keep sports and politics poles apart. But alas it takes only one business man to lure the authorities away. A famous business man wants his son to be in the playing XI in the place of a real talented but poor boy in the national football team.

Analysis and Technicalities:

Marathi film industry’s renowned filmmaker Sanjay Surkar has helmed this film and we must say despite of few shortcomings the director has managed to come up with a decent film. The technology in the film is poor as the kind of effects expected in a sport film isn’t utilized in this one that makes it disappointing.

Performances:

Actors like Adinath Kothare and Sachin Khedekar have delivered commendable performances in the film. Siddharth Kher has comparatively performed poorly than his earlier work. The background score lacks the punch that a usual sport’s film should possess. The film would have been an underperformer if not for Sanjay’s smooth hand at direction that makes it a decent watch.

Plus Points:

- Acting
- Direction

Minus Points:

- Poor editing
- Effects
- Cinematography
- Screenplay

Verdict: Watch it for the performances and a decent storyline.

Yeh Dooriyan Hindi Movie Review

Story:
The film has Deepshika as ‘Simmi’ in lead who is going through a rough patch in her marital life. Simmi’s husband Aditya (Inder Kumar) gives her divorce and throws her and their kids out of his house. Simmi who is a Bollywood choreographer by profession decides to move on with her life. She after her divorce gets a new house for her and her kids. In the course of time she meets Raj (Kaishav Arora) a budding model who falls in love with her despite of knowing the fact that she is a divorcee and has two kids. Raj goes out of his way to impress Simmi who too eventually falls for him. Simmi’s kids are extremely fond of Raj who loves them like his own kids. But their good-run is hit by Raj’s mother (Kunika) who slams Raj for dating a divorcee mother against the society norms. Meanwhile Simmi’s former husband Aditya too comes to woo her back. From there on the film is all about Simmi’s dilemma to choose between the two men in her life and also her fight for justice from the biased society.

Analysis:
The film is directed by Deepshika who has also written the story, screenplay and dialogues of the film. And in all the departments the actress has underperformed. The story has nothing new to offer and lacks the novelty factor. The script too is melodramatic, the twists and turns are almost predictable and so is the fate of this film. There are four songs in the film and these too fail to add melody to the already dreading story.

Performances:
Deepshika and Kaishav Arora as lead stars poorly lead the film. We wonder what made debutant Kaishav take this film as his debut vehicle to make an entry in Bollywood. The film also has supporting actors in form of television stars like Ayub Khan, Delnaz Paul and Kunika who’s performances can be easily tagged as average. The film also has Salman Khan’s small cameo and he is at his casual best in the small appearance.

Technicalities:
The music leaves no impact and the rest of the technical aspects too are weak. The film seems like more of an immature attempt. The film despite of all the efforts fails to leave an impression on your mind and has nothing falling in place for it. This makes us give the film a nothing more than 1.5.

Plus Points:
    Salman Khan’s cameo
    Social issue

Minus Points:
    Performances
    Technicalities
    Music

Final Word:

Shabri Movie Review

Story:

The film revolves around ‘Shabri’ played by (Eesha) a female don based in Mumbai and her tragic story. The film starts with Shabri’s pitiful life as she is the only earning member of the family. Shabri has to support her clan that comprises of an alcoholic father, a mother and an unemployed younger brother. The poverty and unavoidable-unfortunate accidents in her life land her in the ugly world of underworld. And the film from thereon is all about her journey in the crime world.

Ananlysis:
Multi-task-master is an apt word to describe Lalit Marathe - the captain of this ship called ‘Shabri’. The man with multiple talents has penned the story, written the screenplay and dialogues as well as has directed the film. All the jobs that he helmed have been superbly performed by Marathe. He like a thorough genius has helmed the film with sharp scenes and cut-throat story, ‘Shabri’ is a film with a lot of commendable substance. The film despite of its de-glam story and unconventional take has the potential to beat any commercial cinema on the given day. And the whole credit for making it a cult caper goes to Marathe!!!!

Performances:

The film has a powerful and gripping first half however a viewer will be disappointed with a comparatively slower second half. Talking about performance and the film has Eesha written all over it. The film is by far the best performance by the actress and will remain as one of the best highlight of her short career.

Other supporting stars like Manish Wadhwan, Pradeep Rawat, Raj Arun too perform their parts well but looked weak, courtesy Eesha’s power-house performance that over took all. The biggest and the only disappointing performer of the lot was Zakir Hussain who didn’t quite live up to the standard of the film. Ramu’s the then muse Urmila Matondkar’s short cameo in this film is captivating as well.

Technicalities:

The back-ground score of the film is unconventional yet attention grabbing. It perfectly keeps up with the pace of the film. The film hasn’t been publicized but we hope that the spread of word will help the film gain the much needed momentum and appreciation.

Plus Point:

- Eesha Koppikar’s Performance
- Urmila’s Cameo
- Direction
- Story

Minus Points:

- Slow Second Half

Final Word: Watch it for some powerful cinema

Not A Love Story Movie Review

Story:

An aspiring actress Anusha Chawla (Maria Susairaj) from Chandigarh convinces her fiancé Robin (Deepak Dobriyal) to let her go to Mumbai to pursue her dreams. She witnesses the casting couch and through a veteran struggling friend gets assured that this is a game of give and take. But luckily gets a film through Ashish Bhatnagar (Ajay Gehi) who apparently falls in love with her. Gauging his intentions as wrong, Anusha sleeps with him only to find out the next morning that her fiancé has given her a surprise visit. Baffled by all this Anusha makes a story due to which angry Robin kills Ashish. Then the two dispose off his body in the cruelest manner.

The latter half of the film has the interrogation and the court hearing where truth is moulded by lawyers. The movie ends with a statement quoting, ‘The Prosecution wanted them Killed, The lawyers wanted them to kill each other and they wanted to be killed together. The verdict is still awaited.’

Analysis:

Making a film on a true story that isn’t very old is a bold thing to do and this was totally acceptable from RGV. The way he handled the story and the way he showcased how truth was molded in the court room is really worth a watch.

Performances:

Mahie Gill is back with a stupendous performance post ‘Dev D’. The lady is a natural stunner and immensely talented. Adding to the awesomeness is Deepak Dobriyal with a mind boggling performance. Ajay Gehi and rest of the supporting cast too do a fab job.

Technicalities:

Music is soothing enough but not memorable. Background score is too loud and at times made the film seem horror. Some camera angles were innovative while some were annoying but that’s how RGV films are made. Ramu’s direction is unique and has an edge over others. They have used the same building Dheeraj Solitaire, the original venue of the crime and cinematography is quite realistic as required.

Plus Points: Performances, direction

Minus Points: background score, weird camera angles

Final Word: Watch it if you like RGV’s direction

Chatur Singh Two Star Movie Review

Story: The story of the film is based on the novel ‘Chalaak Jasoos’ and it revolves around the not-so-smart cop Chatur Singh who is famous for his goof-ups and foolish acts. He lives in his own fantasy world and considers himself to be smarter than the world, when actually the truth is a totally opposite one. Despite of his not-so-funny antics and dumb nature he luckily unfolds a murder mystery and accomplishes as pivotal mission. Ameesha Patel plays his love interest in the film and she helps him find the right clues. Suresh Menon plays his aide who is in awe of Chatur Singh whom he considers as his ‘guru’.

Analysis: The film has disaster written all over it. The humor in it is out-dated and the story is one of the most irrelevant tales of recent times. Based on the once-famous novel it isn’t a great concept for the film. There are many loop holes in the script and director Ajay Chandhok fails to cover them up. His loose hand at direction adds further woes to the film. The comic sequences are irrelevant and are totally baseless as they lack humor.

Performances & Technicalities: The director fails to utilize a powerful star Sanjay Dutt who has given gem of performances in the same genre of comedy in films like ‘Munnabhai’ and ‘Dhamaal’. Talented supporting cast like Satish Kaushik and Suresh Menon’s versatility too is wasted as their potential isn’t explored to the fullest. We wonder what made Ameesha take up the role which does no good to her career as her character in the film is easily avoidable.

The music in the film is given by Sajid-wajid who gave some great music in ‘Dabangg’ fails to live up to expectations as none of the songs have the potential to climb the charts but are decent if not good.

Rumi Jaffery’s poor story and equally pitiable screenplay are the major drawbacks of this not-so-funny film. In the age of slapstick and masala comedies we wonder if the film will be able to survive the Box-office storm as along with it two more films namely ‘Not a love story’ and ‘Sahi Dhande Galat Bande’ too are releasing on the same day.

Plus Point: Sanjay Dutt’s name

Minus Point: Story, Performances, direction, screenplay, music

Final Word: Skip it

Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande Movie Review

Story: Revolt is in the air! Anna Hazare is fighting for his land, his country India with the government and similar is the story of our poor farmers who have been exploited by the government. Their fertile land has been snatched away from them in return for an amount that is one eighth of its actual market value. Our protagonist of the film ‘Sahi Dhande Galat Bande’, Rajbeer (Parvin Dabas) along with his three aides Sexy (Vansh Bhardawaj), Doctor (Kuldeep Ruhil) and Ambani (Ashish Nayyar) is a small time crook who empties people’s house for money.

Analysis: The tweak arises when he is asked to empty the land of his own people for the government. His village is on a dharna against the govt. and now by hook or by crook, it becomes Rajbeer’s business to fight for his people, his village, and his land. He tries kidnapping, the CM’s son, kills his own mentor but finally, when the leader of the farmers is shot dead, he sits on the hunger strike himself and chants for their demands.

Performances: Parvin Dabas is one of the most underrated actors of the country. His command over his craft is quite prominent in this film too just like ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’, and ‘’. His aides, too do a fab job with each one standing out. Strong characterization makes the film even more watchable.  Preeti Jhangiani plays a news reporter and has a blink and miss role. The villagers played by Yashpal Sharma and Neena Kulkarni are quite convincing. Sharat Saxena as the antagonist is good too. Kiran Juneja plays the CM and for the very first time was exploited to her full potential. Tena Desae is talented and proves it again post ‘Yeh Faasley’.

Technicalities: Kudos to Dabas’ debut hand at direction, for pulling off the subject with panache! Nowhere did it seem stretched or diverting from the point unlike the recently released ‘Aarakshan’. The subtle unconventional comic sequences, the slow-motion action filmed by the director are commendable. More films like ‘Sahi Bande Galat Dhande’ should be made in India. It is an engrossing, edge of the seat entertainer that takes you on a revolutionary journey. No wonder Karan Johar wanted to remake it with Salman Khan. Yes the film would have worked better with a bigger star cast but nevertheless talent never goes unnoticed.

The cinematography, editing make take it to another level. The music is foot stomping and the background makes the film more thrilling.

Plus Point: Direction, Performances,

Minus Point: Lesser known star cast

Final Word: Don’t miss it

Aarakshan Movie Review

Story:

Prabhakar Anand (Amitabh Bachchan) is the principal of Shakuntala Thakral Mahavidyalaya (STM), a college in Bhopal and believes that education should not be sold. In the spring of 2008, Supreme Court’s verdict of raising the reservations of backward classes from 27% to 49% in colleges causes a situation of havoc. There are students who are happy about it and the ones who are not, who believe that merit is what should decide the future of India. Prabhakar, though is not a racist, but thinks that Aarakshan is important and this belief lands him into trouble, a fight with those in power.

Analysis:

The film is pretty confusing for an average Indian cine-goer. Jha though had a strong subject in hand, could not present it in the right manner. The film was expected to bring about a revolution of a kind that will be a ray of light in today’s dark era of Aarakshan but does nothing that would be really inspiring.

Performance:

The entire film rests on Amitabh Bachchan’s shoulders as the rest of the actors including Saif Ali Khan and Prateik are totally wasted. Amitabh does total justice to his character; they don’t call him superstar just like that. Saif and Deepika too have done their job well. Though Saif had nothing much to do, Deepika impresses. Pratiek seems to struggle with the shhuddh Hindi dialogues and overacts at places. Manoj Bajpai is excellent in a negative shade while Tanvi Azmi is a treat to watch.

Technicalities:

The cinematography was average, editing could have been crispier. The film was jumping from one scene to another and there was no much connect. Strangely enough Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s music too was not flattering. The use of poet-saint Narsinh Mehta’s instrumental ‘Vaishnav Jan To’ was an intelligent thing to do as the background score and so it scores full marks. The language used is very strong Hindi which may not be understood by many, however, the powerful dialogues are the saving grace of the film.

Plus Points:

- Performances
- Background Score
- Strong subject
- Dialogues

Minus Points:

- Weak Script
- Cinematography
- Confusing

Final Word: Once watch

Chala Mussadi Office Office Movie Review

Story:

'Chala Mussaddi.. Office Office’ is about a common man Mussaddilal Tripathy (Pankaj Kapur), who is chooses to be naïve about the corruption and bribery prevailing in the Indian society. Gone for a long pilgrimage, 62 year old Mussaddi comes back only to find out that the pension office has declared him dead in their records. Mussaddi decides to fight against the system alone and finally succeeds. He meets corrupt bureaucrats at every nook and corner, be it the railway officials, or the pandits who need bribe for performing a pooja, or the city collector.

Analysis:

The film has a good message that asks the common man to stop bribing officials so that the future generation can live in peace. Based on the Gandhian philosophy of being the change, the film hits the right chord, and for that and for the performances, we would go for two stars for this one.

Performance:

There is no issues as far as the performances go. The film lands on Kapur’s shoulder who is certainly a powerhouse of talent. Gaurav Kapur as Mussaddi’s unemployed son does his part well and impresses. Farida Jalal is in a blink and miss role. The rest of the cast is similar to what we are already accustomed to seeing. Even the dialogues are the same. The comic sequences just manage to create small giggles here and there.

Technicalities:

The problem with the film is that it lacks novelty and the cinematography and screenplay seems age old. Sajid Wajid has added one song to the film that describes Mussaddi and his dilemma. Though the song is nice, playing it at repetitive intervals gets irritating. The film seems dragged and boring in parts.

Plus Points:

- Pankaj Kapur, Good Message, Office Office Telly show credit.

Minus Points:

- Innovation, Screenplay

Final Word: Can be shun.

Rating: 2/5

Phir Movie Review

Story:
Talking about ‘Phhir’, the film is about the journey of a soul who does something wrong in one of its lifetime and to pay for it has to travel to another lifetime and take rebirth. The film starts with a shattered looking man Vikramaditya who kneels down to Swamiji to ask help for the wrong he has done. He is reborn as Dr. Kabir Malhotra (Rajneesh Duggal) whose wife Sia (Roshni Chopra) suddenly disappears one day and he goes through hell to find her. God gifted Disha (Adah Sharma) can see the future and helps Kabir find his wife. The entire story has a spiritual meaning to it that is unveiled after a thrilling journey.

Analylsis:

Well, the film has quite an unconventional storyline but at the same time it seems unbelievable and illogical. Vikramaditya kills himself and no one even finds out about his and wife’s death. For years the skeleton of his dead body lies in the estranged bungalow for years for his reincarnation Kabir to come and see and this makes no sense. It is not an edge of the seat thriller but yes does keep you glued. Shall relate to anyone who is interested in Life after death and spirituality!

Performances:

The performances in the film are not strong but are not bad either. Rajneesh Duggal overacts and mediocre. Adah Sharma looks captivating but seems expressionless sometimes. Roshni Chopra takes care well of the emotions but still needs to polish herself. The rest of the supporting cast is ok.

Technicalities:

The dialogues seem absolutely clichéd and predictable. Music by singer-composer Raghav Sachar is mediocre. He features in a special song but fails to make an impact. Cinematography is the saving grace of the film. Editing could have been a little crispier.

Plus Points:

- Cinematography
- unconventional storyline
- thrill

Minus points:

- cliched dialogues,
- mediocre music and a few unreasonable sequences

Final Word: Once watch

Gandhi To Hitler Movie Review

Gandhi To Hitler Movie Review

Story:

‘Gandhi to Hitler’ is a story set during World War II and is all about the letters written by Mahatma Gandhi (Avijit Dutt) to Adolf Hitler (Raghubir Yadav). The film also attempts to expose the rarely explored relationship of Hitler with his long-term lover Eva Braun (Neha Dhupia). Apart from that it also showcases the relationship that the two shared and their marriage that took place just before Hitler’s death. The creative minds behind this film have tried to put in lot of content compiled in one film and it is due to this that they failed to excel in even one aspect.

Analysis:
The film from start to end is a tale that only confuses the viewer as it leads nowhere.
From depiction to narration the film falls flat on expectations. It seems that it’s all about the heinous policies of Nazism and the heroism of Gandhian philosophy. The film is neither entertaining nor informative and as the never ending film moves on the audience wonders what’s up next?!

Performances:
Nalin Singh and Rakesh Ranjan Kumar’s poorly framed story has no potential to excel. Director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar fails at both the jobs that he helmed, one as a director he is completely unsuccessful in giving the film a direction and as a screenplay writer he’s unable to cover the loop holes that the story had.

Talking about the film’s actors, we wonder what made a talented performer like Raghubir Yadav to take up the film which does no good to his career. Neha Dhupia as ‘Eva Braun’ is a sheer disappointment and her experiment with off-beat cinema after a critically acclaimed film ‘Phas Gaye Re Obama’ puts a full stop to her successful run.

Technicalities:
The music in the film adds no drama that it was expected to! The film is a complete under performer and will leave you with quite lot of unanswered queries in your mind. Including this one: Why was this film made???!! Well we too don’t have an answer for that one.

Rating: 1/5

I Am Kalam Review

Story:
In the backdrop of a small village in rural Rajasthan, the movie starts with a hapless mother Meera (Meena Mir) who wants her barely 10 year old son Chhotu (Harsh Mayar) to work in a Dhaba to pay off her debts. Dhaba owner Bhaati (Gulshan Grover) who initially is reluctant to hire Chhotu is later amazed by his impeccable learning ability. He makes two friends, a French lady, Lucie Madame (Beatrix Ordeix), who promises to take him to Dehli and Prince Rannvijay Singh (Husaan Saad), a lil boy of his age who has all the riches of the world at his disposal and only one friend that is him.

Analysis:

More of a documentary, ‘I Am Kalam’ teaches that more than your fate it’s your Karma that matters. Shahrukh Khan says that he use to sleep at a road side bench and daily borrow Rs.20 from a friend to reach film city before he became a super star. As they truly say, life is not what you couldn’t do so far, it’s about what you can do now. It is sheer determination and your eagerness to make it big that will create wonders in life.

Performance:

Background score of the film by Deepak Pandit is absolutely in sync with the screenplay. Cinematography, editing, lyrics, art direction are bang on. The film has no breaks, and is an inspiring story and a commendable attempt by director Nila Madhab Panda. But there is a possibility that a must watch for all classes and ages, ‘I Am Kalam’ might be seen as a multiplex film.

Technicalities:

Coming to the technicalities, the film boasts of flawless performances by Gulshan Grover, Harsh Mayar, Meena Mir and even Beatrix Ordeix. But who stands out of all is definitely Husaan Saad, who is profoundly talented as Kunwar Rannvijay Singh. He is a natural stunner and gives a spectacular performance. Pitobash who was last seen in Ekta Kapoor’s ‘Shor In The City’ is a pure genious. He plays Chhotu’s co-worker who is slightly jealous of this smart-witted chap.

Plus Points:

- Story, Screenplay, Background Score, Direction

Minus Points:

- It is a multiplex movie.

Final Word:  Must Watching Film.

Rating: 4/5

Khap Movie Review

Story
‘Khap’ is a parallel government for a conglomerate 40 villages which has a rule that no boy or girl from the same clan or from these 40 villages can marry each other as they are traditionally siblings. Chaudhary (Om Puri) is the President of the Khap Panchayat. His son Madhur (Mohnish Bahl) leaves his father because of his inhuman activities of killing in the name of honour. 16 years later, his daughter Riya (Yuvika Chaudhary) falls in the same trap.

Analysis
As far as the technicalities go the movie has nothing to boast about. The direction, script, screenplay, editing are all below average. Music that is considered to be the backbone of a film also is exasperating and very archaic.

Performances
Good performances by Om Puri, Govind Namdeo, Manoj Pahwa and Maohnish Bahl also could not do much to save the film. Yuvika Chaudhary seems to have improved and seems less irritating. Sartaj who plays Yuvika’s love interest needs acting lessons as he over reacts at places. The film is stretched to the core and the masala elements put in to commercialize it lack quality.
Tehnicalities
Based on a real issue, the film could have been modeled in a much better fashion to put through the message, but poor direction and script kills the motive of the film. The love sequences injected were total waste. Films like ‘Taare Zameen Par’, ‘Rajneeti’, and ‘Lagaan’ said unconventional stories but what worked with them was the entertainment quotient and the hand work put in by the technicians.

The subject that was movie is revolving on needs to be portrayed in a better manner and needs attention of the other side of India that is not aware about honour killings. For just trying to do that, the film can be watched but by people who are involved in such cold-hearted acts.

Plus Points
Om Puri Performance

Minus points
Poor Direction
Script
Screenplay

Final Word
KHAP tries to do too many things at the same time it fails to do many things
